I like to schedule outdoor sessions as far away from midday as possible. This could be early morning, or in the last hour or two before the sunset; these times have the softest light. But all the beautiful light in the world won't make a difference if that is during nap time and the kids are tired, so we'll talk to determine the best time for your family. Newborn sessions are best scheduled in the morning to have the most light available indoors.  

For a family session, I suggest that you imagine you are putting together one outfit- all coordinating but not too matchy-matchy. I suggest starting with the most difficult person to dress (in my family that is me), then coordinate that outfit with the rest of the family's outfits. Avoid large logos or patterns that can be distracting. And you can always ask me for extra help!

For an in-home newborn session, plan for more simple and neutral outfits- imagine a polished version of your most comfortable self. It's important that you feel comfortable- not squeezing into your pre-pregnancy jeans at home on your couch! Some examples might be comfy jeans and a blouse or sweater, or a casual dress and a polo shirt and jeans for the guys. 

Newborn sessions typically take place in your home, as this is where both mom and baby are most comfortable. My primary focus for these sessions are images of the baby and your new family. This can include posed and prop photos as well as candid photos of the baby. I bring a minimal amount of neutral props including blankets and wraps, and I love incorporating your special items and props. Once those images are complete, I begin to capture images of the family and the nursery. Newborn sessions usually take 2 hours, this allows for plenty of time for feeding and soothing. If experience has taught me anything, it's that babies can't be rushed. 

Family sessions are taken outdoors at the location of your choice. If you're not sure where to go, don't worry. I scout parks and locations throughout St. Charles and St. Louis county and can suggest the perfect location for your session. Sessions are either 30-45 minutes or 60-90 minutes, depending on which session you choose. I usually bring very few props with me- maybe a blanket and a small bench or chair. Once you show up for your session, your job is done! I will lead your family through the location, taking photos as we go. I capture both formal posed shots as well as candid photos. I love connecting with children, and it usually helps if only one adult is directing, so I'll take over the job of coaxing smilies out of your little ones. Since you'll likely be in the photos too, I just need you to relax and enjoy spending time with your family. Fair warning, I will likely make a fool of myself- singing silly songs and telling bad jokes =)

While I do my best to monitor the weather forecast prior to scheduling as well as the week before our sessions, Mother Nature often has a mind of her own. Since the weather here can change so quickly, I will give you a call an hour or so before our session IF the weather suddenly turns bad and I feel we need to reschedule. If you don't hear from me, we are still good to go. I know that we have both put considerable time into preparing for our session, so I don't take this lightly. However, if I feel that the weather is unsafe for your session, I will do my best to let you know as soon as possible and we will reschedule your session. 

About two weeks after your session, I will email you a link to your photos in a password protected gallery with your images. You can view, download and share your images from this gallery. Once they have been downloaded, you can save them however you like: in the cloud, burn a DVD or upload them to be printed.

Every one of my sessions comes with a print release so that you can print your images, anywhere, anytime- they're yours for life! Occasionally, I will offer print products included in your session fee, these are fulfilled at my choice of high quality professional labs. While I can point you in the right direction of high-quality print labs, you are under no obligation to purchase prints from me. Just let me know what products you are looking for and I will be happy to help you find the right vendor for your prints!
